Why Having an Advance Directive Just Makes Sense

Here’s something most people don’t want to think about: What happens if you’re in the hospital, unable to speak, and decisions need to be made fast? Would your family know what to do? Would doctors know what you’d want?

That kind of situation can catch anyone off guard. And in the middle of it all, loved ones are left trying to guess. That’s not the position you want to put them in.

This is exactly why an Advance Directive is so helpful. It’s a simple document where you write down what kind of medical treatment you’d want if you couldn’t speak for yourself. You can also name someone to make choices for you if needed. Ideally, someone who knows you well and you trust completely.

Without anything in writing, families often feel stuck. They might disagree or not feel sure about what’s right. Hospitals may just follow the usual steps, which might not line up with what you believe.

Having something written down clears all of this up. It helps your family feel confident they’re doing what you would’ve wanted. It also gives doctors a clear path to follow.

You can include things like whether you’d want to be on life support, have CPR, or get a feeding tube. You can also add personal notes, like religious or spiritual beliefs that are important to you.

Putting one together doesn’t take long. Most people can get it done in one short appointment. But it can save your loved ones a lot of heartache.

If you haven’t made one yet, it’s worth doing. We’re happy to walk you through it and answer any questions along the way.

Planning ahead is never easy, but it’s one of the kindest things you can do for the people who care about you.
