When a child takes on the role of caregiver, you see the financial strain, time commitment and emotional weight they are carrying. You’re grateful. You start to ask yourself if that child should receive more in your estate plan.
It’s a complicated question. Families don’t always agree on what’s “fair.”
You have a right to divide your estate however you choose. However, if you plan to give one child more, it’s important to spell your reasons out clearly. Spell this out in your will or trust. Clarity now prevents resentment down the road.
You can also include provisions for reimbursement. That might be mileage. Medical expenses. Time taken away from work. A modest caregiver stipend, if appropriate.
Don’t consider it playing favorites. Consider it acknowledging their effort, sacrifice and reality.
These conversations are sensitive. But having them now—while you’re well, while relationships are intact—can help your family understand your decisions
